Social Intelligence – It’s all about respect.
Social Intelligence is the cornerstone for a healthy culture because it embraces the notion of respect. While it is beneficial to understand ourselves better, it is far more important to understand others better. Why? If I have a way to understand your values, and I am willing to show respect for your values we will enjoy a more productive relationship (The Platinum Rule). By productive relationship I mean one that is free of conflict and one in which we naturally leverage each other’s strengths. Individuals benefit from reduced stress, which promotes wellness – and higher performance, which improves job satisfaction and growth. The organization benefits from higher productivity, which stems from higher individual and team performance, less presenteeism and absenteeism, improved customer (internal and external) service, and leadership effectiveness.
There are many systems on the market that help people understand their personality and, with training, can aid in self-improvement. There is value in that, but the cost is high (measured in time and other training-related costs) and the return on investment is low. Furthermore, personality is the wrong place to focus because it can be very confusing and misleading. One’s behavior is subject to one’s environment, which is constantly changing, and one’s personality is subject to interpretation by others. On the other hand, a person’s values don’t change day to day and is therefore, a better reference point for organizational development, interpersonal relationships, and corporate culture.

Culture – You can’t change what you can’t measure.
It’s not possible (or at least not practical) to change behavior to something that is counter-cultural. It is fairly easy to describe behaviors that you consider desirable. But, it’s not possible to forcibly change the culture to become something that will sustain those behaviors.
From an early age we have been taught The Golden Rule. That is, to treat others as we would like to be treated. Systems that focus on self-awareness promote this idea. But, we now know that the Golden Rule promotes the wrong idea. Instead, we should learn to treat others as they would like to be treated – The Platinum Rule. This implies first, that we need a way to understand that different people hold different values and second, we need a way to understand what those values are.
So, the first question is, “What is the culture”? How would you describe it? And, if you tried to describe it would you get consensus throughout the organization? Culture is one of those things that is hard to describe – it just is. We use an assessment-basedsystem that will help deduce the culture through a portrayal of its core values based on colors. We can quickly reveals that individuals have color, departments have color, teams have color, divisions have color, companies have color and customers have color.
